Medical Imaging Center - Light Microscopy

The MIC-LM (Medical Imaging Center - Light Microscopy) is a central unit of the Medical Research Services (MRS) and the newly established Medical Imaging Center (MIC).

It was founded to meet the increasing demand for high-quality imaging in biomedical and life science research and serves as a key structural component for advancing research, teaching, and innovation within the Medical Faculty of Ruhr University Bochum. Its mission is to provide researchers in medicine, biology, and related disciplines with access to cutting-edge light microscopy technologies, including high- and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques such as confocal, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), FLIM-FRET, and SIM. These imaging modalities are complemented by live-cell imaging as well as automated high-content and screening systems.

The facility follows a holistic approach: in addition to image acquisition, it offers comprehensive support in sample preparation, protocol development, image analysis (including deep learning), and the interpretation and visualization of results.

The facility’s guiding principle is to enable the effective application of advanced imaging technologies across a broad range of research areas and to provide personalized support from project conception to publication. This ensures barrier-free access to complex microscopy systems while maintaining a high standard of quality assurance through structured training, user support, and data analysis workflows.
